So, Molly and Joel mutually decided they should be friends. Because of it Molly got addicted to pills and she started sleeping with Frank again. In the present, Joel and Molly reveal that they are getting divorced, as their marriage has since fallen apart due to increasing debts. Joel and Molly get married, and Joel opens a coffee shop attached to Upper Sweet Side. Joel wins the fight, and Spike is taken by the police, only to be shot in the head when he tries to escape. They agree to get back together, but Molly's ex-husband Spike, who was just released from jail, confronts Joel. He arrives to find that she has already left Eggbert at the altar, and goes to the Brooklyn Promenade to find her. Molly and Eggbert become engaged, and Joel realizes that he is still in love with Molly, and races to the wedding.
Joel begins dating Tiffany again, and Molly begins dating her banker, Eggbert. They break up after a trip to Molly's parents' house, who are revealed to be white supremacists. Joel apologizes, and the two begin dating. Joel admits that he is not over his relationship with Tiffany, and Molly leaves angrily. They initially fight, but end up going on a date, where Joel meets Molly's son from a previous relationship. On their way to the same Halloween party, Joel and Molly meet. Joel lived with his girlfriend, Tiffany, until he caught her cheating on him with his coworker Trevor. At the time, Molly owned a small independent candy store, Upper Sweet Side, that was being bought out by Joel's company, a larger candy corporation called CSR. It’s like they did a brainstorm for a rom com send-up, and then just threw in everything instead of sorting through their ideas for the good ones.Joel and Molly have dinner with an unhappy couple, Kyle and Karen, and recount how they first began dating.
This could be brilliant if it were done strategically, but instead this film is just a haphazard mess of one-off jokes and dropped plot lines. Except the actual plot only briefly touches on that, and then gets almost immediately side-tracked by a string of trope-driven wink-wink-nod-nods toward basically every other rom com you’ve ever seen. Starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, this star-studded comedy follows the roller coaster romance of Molly, a small candy shop owner, and Joel, the corporate executive trying to put her out of business. The premise: It’s a meta rom com that’s only about half as funny as it thinks it is.

You know how Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie are only like 50% funny, and the other 50% is just random jokes that completely fall flat and have very little to do with anything? Yeah, well, this is that for rom coms.
